Modify a custom field
You can modify custom fields in ChartHop by editing the type of information they contain, cloning them with their current options, or deleting them.
You can edit a custom field if you have just added it and need to change its settings. You can only edit custom fields that you have created, not built-in fields that come with ChartHop.
- Do not edit fields that are in use, since you may break existing calculations, forms, or reports. Instead, clone and rename such fields.
- You can see whether a field is in use by adding it to the Data Sheet and checking whether it contains data.
To edit a custom field:
- From the left sidebar, select the Settings (gear) menu and choose Fields.
- From the row menu (⋮) next to the field to edit, select Edit.
- In the Edit custom field dialog, make any needed changes.
- Select Save to finish editing the field.
You can clone any field in ChartHop from the Fields page. When you clone a field, you create a new custom field that starts with settings you want to copy. For example, when working with fields that contain Carrot expressions, you could clone a similar field and then edit the expression to reflect what you want to do.
To clone a custom field:
- From the left sidebar, select the Settings (gear) menu and choose Fields.
- From the row menu (⋮) next to the field to edit, select Clone.
- In the Clone field dialog that appears, rename the field and make any other changes.
- Select Save to finish cloning the field.
When necessary, you can delete custom fields—for example, if you have created a field in error.
- Only delete custom fields when necessary, and not when there is data stored in them! Deleting a field deletes its stored data from ChartHop.
- Be mindful of whom you allow to delete fields. Only Owners and Technical owners can delete fields. ChartHop recommends hiding fields instead. Learn more.
To delete a field:
- From the left sidebar, select the Settings (gear) menu and choose Fields.
- From the row menu (⋮) next to the field to delete, select Delete.
- In the Delete field dialog, enter the field name.
- Select Delete to finish deleting the field.
