Packages: Basic | Standard | Premium

Roles: Technical Owner

Before learning to modify a field category, make sure you know how to create custom fields and field categories.

You can modify all existing field categories from the Categories module. Categories are used to simplify the process of locating sets of related fields when setting up Data sheet views.

In this guide, you'll learn some common operations for modifying existing categories, such as:

  • Rearranging field categories
  • Editing field categories
  • Deleting field categories
  • Hiding contained fields

Rearranging field categories

Column chooser categories are displayed in the same order as the Categories page.. To change the order in the column chooser, simply change the order here.

Editing field categories

If you've just created a new field category and you need to correct an error, or if you simply need to look at the configuration on a particular category, you'll need to use the Edit function. To edit or view the contents of a category, simply:

  1. Navigate to the Categories page.
  2. Locate the category in question, and click on it so that the details are visible.
  3. Make the necessary changes to the field, or make a note of the config you were looking for.
  4. If there are pending changes, click Save.
  5. Repeat as needed.

Deleting field categories

You can't delete built-in field categories.

If you need to delete a custom field category, you can do so from the Categories page.

  1. Navigate to the Categories page.
  2. Locate the category in question, and click on it so that the details are visible.
  3. Click the overflow menu in the top right-hand corner of the category.
  4. Click delete.
  5. Click confirm on the warning dialogue.
  6. Repeat as needed.

Hiding contained fields

If you need to hide the fields contained in a category from the rest of ChartHop, you can do so from the Categories page.

Warning: this procedure will hide all contained fields from the entire application until you restore them. Hidden fields will:

  • No longer be visible in forms that had the associated field as a question
  • No longer be visible in the column chooser for the data sheet
  • No longer be visible in the column chooser for scenarios
  • No longer be visible in the column chooser for history exports
  1. Navigate to the Categories page.
  2. Locate the category in question, and click on it so that the details are visible.
  3. Click the overflow menu in the top right-hand corner of the category.
  4. Click Hide contained fields.
  5. Repeat as needed.
  6. You can restore these fields by modifying step four to Restore contained fields.

Once a category no longer has visible fields (i.e., they've all been hidden), the category will also be hidden from the column chooser. Restoring one or more fields to the category will also restore the category in the column chooser.
