You can use your headcount planning scenario to propose changes in your ChartHop organization's internal structure when hiring and filling open jobs.

This section includes the following topics:

- Move a person in a scenario
- Exchange a job in a scenario
- Fill a job in a scenario

### How an open job's start date affects fiscal-year cost

An open job's **planned start date** determines how much of it lands inside a given fiscal year or quarter. When you view scenario cost by **Fiscal year** or **Quarter** (see [Viewing scenario cost by fiscal year or quarter](https://docs.charthop.com/scenarios)), moving a job's start date later in the period lowers its cost for that period, because the job is only paid for the months it's active. The **Annualized** view doesn't change: it always reflects the full-year cost.

For example, for an open Staff Engineer role at $200,000/year in a fiscal year running Apr - Mar:

| Planned start | Months active in the fiscal year | Fiscal-year cost | Annualized |
| ------------- | -------------------------------- | ---------------- | ---------- |
| October 2026 | 6 | \~$100,000 | $200,000 |
| January 2027 | 3 | \~$50,000 | $200,000 |

This makes the financial upside of a later start date visible as you plan: push the start date out, and the fiscal-year cost drops live.

An open job only contributes cost once it has a salary to price from (planned compensation or a compensation band). Unpriced open jobs count as $0 and won't move the fiscal-year figure.
